Interesting
It certainly does look like the
Scolytus
gallery type. There are other genera with that basic gallery type though too, so I couldn't say for sure that it is
Scolytus
.
Scolytus multistriatus
would only be in elm.
The interesting thing to me is the host. There aren't any
Scolytus
in North America recorded from
Acer
. The only Scolytine I'm aware of known specifically to attack
Acer negundo
is
Euwallacea fornicatus
, but this isn't that species (they are shothole borers that go into the wood, not through the cambium). There are a bunch of Scolytines that go into other
Acer
spp., but I'm not sure if this is any of those. I'm really curious what made this gallery.
To give me an idea of scale, what is the diameter of this stem? Would you be willing/able to look for more galleries in this tree (maybe some are still active)?

Diameter of stems
The snag was easily 1.5-2' in diameter. The branch that I photo'd and posted originally was about 8" diameter. I am posting a few more photos of this same snag with different appearing galleries. I will look at over boxelders we have but this tree no longer exists.
