Arhopalus rusticus obsoletus - Arhopalus rusticus - female

Arhopalus rusticus obsoletus - Arhopalus rusticus - Female
7 km east of Paw Paw, 39.5224, -78.3641, Morgan County, West Virginia, USA
August 1, 2012
Size: 19 mm
At night on trunk of large Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobus) that had been struck by lightning about one week prior. Other species seen on the same tree included Tetropium schwarzianum, Xylotrechus sagittatus, and Monochamus notatus. I had posted this image years ago under Arhopalus foveicollis as I was not able to discern prominent ocular setae. However, I think the deeply emarginate third metatarsal segment, weak pronotal pits and elytral costae, as well as the location and habitat all point towards A. rusticus obsoletus. As for the ocular stetae, I am still unsure about this character. There are a few setae that are very hard to see. I would not call them prominent, but I do not have an A. foveicollis in my collection to compare.
