reminds me of Erertus sticticus
--just a thought

Eretes sticticus
found it, yes, looks quite similar. All sources I find are from Europe and Asia, though. This one came to my black light in the desert- with several others of its kind.

nearctica.com lists Eretes sticticus!
BUT: in AmBeetles 1:180 the New World specimens are claimed to belong to a separate, however barely distinct, species, E. occidentalis (Er.); so the name on the page is up to you, i guess...
this guy is shown here (click thumbnail to zoom pic) as Eretes form Calif.

I can't get the page ) :

mais qu'est-ce qu'il y a?
pourquoi donc?

Je ne sais pas
Ah, je l'ai trouve: Field guide to beetles of California, Evans and Hogue plate 31

oopsie...
i was sure that by "I can't get the page" you meant the new BGuide genus/species page for the beetle!!! now i see -- my inserted link didn't work -- try http://www.dfg.ca.gov/abl/Lab/CA_digital_ref_Dytiscidae.asp
