Thanks for confirming that this little fly with the striped eyes is a sap fly in the genus Aulacigaster, Spencer! This is the first sap fly I've found in the field.

I think you are right about this fly belonging to the genus Aulacigaster, John! Somehow I blew right over Aulacigastridae as I was browsing through Acalyptratae looking for flies with striped eyes. This fly was feeding on sap from an injured deciduous tree.
