Dermacentor tick - Dermacentor - male

Dermacentor tick - Dermacentor - Male
Elkhorn Slough, Monterey County, California, USA
April 23, 2022
Size: 3.5-4mm
I'm a bit confused on the cornua character. For the Pacific Coast Tick (D. occidentalis) it says it should be "as long as or longer than wide". In my photo it appears to as long as it is wide. However, I assume this could not be the Pacific Coast Tick as the color does not match and the basis capituli is wider than long for this tick.

If this cornua character is important for ID -in the comments can someone verify that they are short compared to the Pacific Coast Tick. Thanks!
