Black Swallowtail butterfly - Papilio polyxenes - male

Black Swallowtail butterfly - Papilio polyxenes - Male
Hurricane, Putnam County, West Virginia, USA
August 7, 2008
I raised this butterfly from about a 1/2" caterpillar until today when it emerged as an adult male. The caterpillars were discovered on my mother in-law's parsley in her herb garden. I had a total of 9 caterpillars. This the first to complete metamorphosis. Only one remains in the larval stage. I believe it was an egg on one of the parsley stalks when I brought them home to raise. The rest are in their pupal stage and should continue to emerge over the next few days.

final count
I never updated this post with the final count of adults released from the 9 caterpillars! I was able to release 7 adults from this brood! I had one chrysalis that never yielded an adult, and one caterpillar that didn't pupate. Overall I was pretty pleased to have had so many make it back to the wild!
