Apparently beetles in this genus are sometimes confused with those in Subfamily Baridinae as in Photo#211363. Are there specific characteristics that show the difference?

 
you're absolutely right, Ted -- thanks!
the same case of mistaken identity; this is a baridine, Geraeus (just like the one that fooled me back then)
baridines have this characteristic pleural piece (mesepimeron) sticking up between elytral shoulder and pronotum and well visible on this photo

Great info, I'll add it to the Identification section. Pertaining to the pleural piece (mesepimeron) sticking up between elytral shoulder and pronotum, is that specific to Geraeus or the entire Baridinae subfamily?

 
with a caveat...
...that Madarini + most Madopterini + Amercedes do not show this feature, so things are actually much more complicated than we'd like them to be...
