I was parked on a sandy parking lot to the trailhead of the Lake Perrault Bob Brown Nature Sanctuary at 3:30 p.m.
and noticed mating bees and bees excavating nests in the sand. They appear to be solitary bees, but nest
colonially since the nests were near each other. I observed what I think are the same species of bees in
another location. Would anyone be able to ID these bees for me? The trail leads to a bog where Pitcher
Plants thrive, but the parking lot had deciduous trees where the bees were. The location is in the western
Upper Peninsula of Michigan near Lake Superior. Thank you. Lynn Murphy
