Big orange Robber Fly - Diogmites basalis - female

Big orange Robber Fly - Diogmites basalis - Female
Moore State Park, Worcester County, Massachusetts, USA
August 9, 2008
Size: 22 mm
Robber Fly, I presume, but it doesn't look like any particular kind I found in a quick search of the guide.

In person it's a rather intimidating shade of red. I wondered if it might be a large wasp.

A few seconds after this shot it flew away and had a brief aerial encounter with another before landing on some grass nearby.

Intimidating
Diogmites. This is the big NE species. D. basalis. Nice animals. Looks like a female.

I wonder
if it could be something in Asilus?
