Cobweb Spider, Very similar to black widow - Steatoda

Cobweb Spider, Very similar to black widow - Steatoda
Decatur, Medlock Area County, Georgia, USA
June 18, 2005
I checked well and was unable to see any hourglass to indicate a black widow, although I have found them in the same area. I am assuming this is some type of cobweb closely related to the black widow. I am new to the site and have found it to hold loads of great pictures, hopefully I will be able to contribute some myself :)

Possibilities.
The "hourglass" mark on widows is on the UNDERSIDE, and what we have here is the top view:-) So, can't say whether it is a widow (very likely, though), or one of the false widows in the genus Steatoda (though most species of Steatoda have at least faint pale markings on the top of the abdomen). Welcome to the site, looking forward to more of your work.

I have no idea if you guys are still out there, the date on the posting I read was 2005... anyway, a dad in my classroom found what he was sure was a black widow in the sandbox in the school yard here in New Haven, Connecticut... How possible is this? Isn't it more likely that he saw something else?
