European Hornet (Vespa crabro)
I think that the large one is a European Hornet. They are common in our area.

Vespula flavopilosa (TN)
The yellowjacket is a dark form of V. flavopilosa. All participants are females (males do not hunt prey - they only care for the sugary stuff).

Stephen Cresswell can cast the final vote. I'm sure you have a nearly identical photo, Stephen? I posted this one because I had both insects in acceptable focus at the same time, but Steve is likely to have some great ones. Which trail, Steve?
