Raccoon Louse - Trichodectes octomaculatus - Trichodectes

Raccoon Louse - Trichodectes octomaculatus - Trichodectes
Warsaw, Kosciusko County, Indiana, USA
June 9, 2022
Size: ~2 mm
Collected from a raccoon that my father shot as it attempted to break into a chicken cage. Host was a healthy female, with many ticks but only a few lice. The lice were mostly found on the back, around the shoulders. I'm fairly certain this is Trichodectes octomaculatus, which as far as I can tell is the only louse which infests raccoons.

Not a problem
There's a lot to learn about using a new site, markup possibilities, search possibilities, etc. Over time, you will see more options available to you. Check out the Help tab above sometime. Looking forward to more of your interesting images. Thanks

Deleting and reposting breaks any links
that might have been created to the original posts. It is actually better to ask editors to move the images rather than reposting them. Besides which, you can tag and move the images yourself since you are the contributor. You don't need to wait for someone else to move them. Click on Tag under the images, move to the page you want them, click on Images, and then on Move tagged images. Please do not delete and repost these images once an octomaculatus page has been created. Just move them. Everything here is editable.

Thank you for the information
I was unaware that I could do that. Understood

Is there a reason that
you deleted all the original posts and reposted them? There is no need to delete and repost - everything on BugGuide is editable

More accurate location.
I didn't realize until just yesterday how to upload images to specific guide pages, and I figured it would be easier to delete and reupload them than to bother the editors to move them. They were previously all placed in Phthiraptera, which while correct, is not as accurate as I know they could be.
