Butterfly - Erynnis horatius

Butterfly - Erynnis horatius
Bridgewater, Somerset County, New Jersey, USA
August 12, 2008
Size: 1.5 Inches
I'm wondering if this is a Duskywing Butterfly. I'm having trouble identifying this little butterfly. He looks a little like a few of the photos in my field guide, but not exactly like any of them. Thanks!

Horace's Duskywing
Judging from the size of the white spots in the postmedian area that are showing due to the light shining through, I'd say this is a Horace's Duskywing - Erynnis horatius. These white marks seem to get the biggest on Horace's, at least of the possible candidates in your area. Compare:

Glad to see you back, Kenny.
We sorely need fearless skipper IDs!

Definitely a skipper. I'd call it a spread wing skipper.
Duskywing is a sub-set of spread wing, but I think that's an accurate name for this one. (Disclaimer: I'm not up on eastern species, and there are a lot more of them.)

Here's a link to a list of spread wing skippers for your county. Hope it helps.

It's very tough to ID many skippers!

Thank you!
Thank you all very much. Whenever I take a photograph of any of my fascinating little friends, I research them until I'm bleary eyed. But, sometimes, the more I look at them, the more they begin to look alike. Your support in the identification process helps a great deal when I just can't get to the id myself. One humbling thing about this research business is that the more research I do, the more I realize I don't know about the insect world. It keeps me curious, though. Thanks a million! Julie :)
