Phyllonorycter fitchella

Phyllonorycter fitchella
1 mile west of Charleston, Coles County, Illinois, USA
August 11, 2008
Size: Length, approx. 3.75mm
Collected as pupa (as evinced by the very short interval between collection and emergence) in leaf mine on white oak, Quercus alba (Fagaceae), near Charleston, Illinois, 11 August, 2008. The adult emerged and was photographed on 13 August, 2008. Also shown are the upperside (left) and underside (right) of the leaf mine of this moth, which was reared individually. The mine is of the "tentiform" type, as is typical and characteristic for the genus Phyllonorycter. Note the pupal exuvium protruding from the underside of the mine, near its upper end as oriented in this photo; the pupal exuvium is protruded at eclosion in all Gracillariidae (and also in quite a few other families of microleps). The scale bar is in mm and applies only to the adult moth, not to the leaf images.
