Staphylinina? - Platydracus tarsalis - male

Staphylinina? - Platydracus tarsalis - Male
Loomis, Placer County, California, USA
May 21, 2022
Size: 16.7 mm
700’ elevation, GPS = 38.8198, -121.1173.
Rural residential area with livestock.

Captured in a Vertical Flight Intercept Trap (V-FIT) left for 7 days. V-FIT used was built from a design by W.B. Warner.

I think this is Platydracus, but I don't see any other golden-hair specimens posted (or the 3 not in the guide) like this. Even using Brunke's key (1) I couldn't find a match. Maybe I'm off base with the genus?

Any help appreciated to get me on track.
Thanks.

PS. According to the key in Hatch (2), this is Platydracus tarsalis.
- The dorsal abdominal segments are not visible, but the black lines on the last segment surrounded by sparse golden hairs continue on the rest of the abdominal tergites.
- The pronotal impunctate median line is shiny, but narrow and hard to see in the reduced image size.
- The rest of the characters mentioned in Hatch are easily visible.

Confirmation or correction appreciated.

Al Newton says there are just 2 spp along the Pacific
Moved tentatively from Platydracus.

Moved from Large Rove Beetles.

Yes, this is absolutely Platy
Yes, this is absolutely Platydracus but I don't know the western species. By the way, the 2011 key covers only northeastern NA, so none of those species occur in California

Thanks Adam for confirming the genus. Guess I have to wait for a western expert for the species name. I'll look at the Canadian keys but I think they are mostly eastern also.

I think it amusing that you responded to my posting 10 min after I posted, but the posting times of our comments make your posting 2 hours before my posting. Time zone attack...
