Hylastes/Hylurgops -
Hylurgops porosus
Minot, Ward County, North Dakota, USA
May 12, 2008
Size: 4 mm
This was initially identified as
Hylastes porculus
, but based upon pronotal and elytral punctation, most likely it is
Hylurgops porosus

I am putting this guy back in ID request to get some ideas, We may think that the genus is not right, and that it may be
hylurgops
. I have Brown (1982) but still cannot get it comfortably through the keys. Anyone have knowledge in the
Hylastes
,
Hylurgops
complex to add their comments?

Moving to ID Request...
Hi, Guy. Sadly, I'm not sure how many people are going to actually see this post in order to give it a fresh look and provide more input. A few of us diligent editors will undoubtedly find it, but because ID Request sorts images by the original submission date, your image is actually dead-last in the queue... Only way around this I can think of is to delete this post and re-submit a new one in its place, but then you'd lose all of the comments already attached to this current post.

Yea
I caught that too, but I am now pretty confidant that this is actually
Hylurgops porosus
based on large and small punctures mixed equally on the pronotum, so I am going to move it there.

could be
There's a positively ID'd H. porculus here:
http://www.forestryimages.org/images/768x512/2516006.jpg
and salebrosus here:
http://www.forestryimages.org/images/768x512/2516005.jpg
It's been awhile, but my recollection is that porculus is somewhat duller and less robust than salebrosus and the elytral punctures are much more pronounced. Also, I think that the pronotum is differently-shaped in a dorsal view, with the base of the pronotum flaring out more in salebrosus. I could be misremembering though.
