Birch Dagger Moth, Acronicta betulae. This moth hides on white birch bark.

Another Species is More Probable.....
.... this is not A. betulae (there is a photo in the
Guide here
).
That species has a well-marked 90 degree angle (or two) in the pm. line and is different in other ways. Saying what this photo represents is more difficult. The two best candidates that I know of are: 9205 - Cottonwood Dagger Moth - Acronicta lepusculina, and 9206 - Millar Dagger Moth - Acronicta vulpina (leporina). To my eye it looks closest to 9206, but the specimen is either worn or very lightly marked, and I am a bit uncertain about the ID. All of these species are shown at

Wow, where in the world I got betulae from I don't know. This is A. lepusculina. The photo matches exactly to specimens I have collected from the same site.
