Noctuidae - Acronicta lepusculina

Noctuidae - Acronicta lepusculina
Beaver Island, Charlevoix County, Michigan, USA
July 4, 2004
Birch Dagger Moth, Acronicta betulae. This moth hides on white birch bark.

Another Species is More Probable.....
.... this is not A. betulae (there is a photo in the Guide here).

That species has a well-marked 90 degree angle (or two) in the pm. line and is different in other ways. Saying what this photo represents is more difficult. The two best candidates that I know of are: 9205 - Cottonwood Dagger Moth - Acronicta lepusculina, and 9206 - Millar Dagger Moth - Acronicta vulpina (leporina). To my eye it looks closest to 9206, but the specimen is either worn or very lightly marked, and I am a bit uncertain about the ID. All of these species are shown at MPG Living Moths Plate 47b

Acronicta
Wow, where in the world I got betulae from I don't know. This is A. lepusculina. The photo matches exactly to specimens I have collected from the same site.
