Citheronia regalis, male - Citheronia regalis - Male
Titus, Elmore County, Alabama, USA
July 8, 2022
Size: WS ~ 10 cm
This individual is a little worn, but it's still a beautiful moth. It was attracted to my porch light overnight. These were once quite common in mid-summer where I live, but, for unknown reasons, their numbers have declined noticeably over the past several decades. This is the first one that I have seen in several years. Of course, their larva is the spectacular "Hickory Horned Devil" - the largest and most fearsome-looking caterpillar in North America.
