Small fly - Orthonevra nitida

Small fly - Orthonevra nitida
Bunker Hill Forest Preserve, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA
August 1, 2008
Size: ~4mm
We never realized how small these guys were from the bugguide images. They have amazing eyes! We saw these small bugs, and weren't even sure they were flies at the time we were photographing them. It looked like they might be laying eggs in the stems of Eryngium yuccifolium flowers but we couldn't quite confirm that.

Keep thinking small!
There are tons of syrphids around, and quite a few have neat eyes, arguably even better than this. Nice find!
