ants - Camponotus floridanus

ants - Camponotus floridanus
Manatee County, Florida, USA
August 15, 2008
This is on an oak tree. Figured they were feeding on something coming from whatever this structure is???

Moved
Moved from Ants.

Formicinae: Camponotus
Camponotus floridanus.

That structure...
is likely a scale insect, which as you suggest would secrete honeydew in the same way aphids do.

Moving -
to Ants for now... Nice image.
