Fritillary species? - Speyeria

Fritillary species? - Speyeria
Grass Lake, Highway 89, El Dorado County, California, USA
July 5, 2022
Size: 3/4 - 1 inch
Fritillaries are a real challenge in the west but at least I gave you a quality image to work with, Roy.

Possibilities
Again, I think we should seek a 2nd opinion with people more familiar with these.

My top pick would be Mormon Fritillary.

I really cannot rule out a few others with just the dorsal.

It truly is a beautiful image.

Possibilities
Roy, Jeffrey Glassberg, in his Butterflies Through Binoculars of the West, states that Mormon Fritillary "is small", about the size of the lesser fritillaries. This fritillary appeared to be larger than that but smaller than Great Spangled Fritillary. I will post this image in Only Butterflies! in Facebook and let Brian Orion give his opinion. Brian lives in Arizona, so he is familiar with western species.

Fritillary possibilities
I posted this image in Only Butterflies! this morning, Roy, and received 2 comments from Brian Orion:

This one legitimately has me stumped. I don't assume you have a ventral. It is a female. I might guess Coronis but the hindwings are too rounded.

Brian Orion
Dave Johnson My next best guess is Callippe. I don't think it is Zerene or Great Basin.

Fritillary possibilities
Roy, I have had 2 opinions from knowledgeable butterfly enthusiasts and one leans toward Coronis Fritillary and the other leans toward Zerene Fritillary.

If you check out the lower of the dorsal wings, Roy, at the very top of those lower wings is a black dot on both lower dorsal wings. The only fritillary image that I have seen with those opposing black dots on the lower dorsal wings is the Callippe Fritillary, one which I don't think I have seen before. Let me know what you think, Roy.

Tough group
I put in a request to join Only Butterflies! but have not been accepted. Do you have any pull?

Facebook group / Only Butterflies!
Roy, I believe I would have a better chance of getting you accepted if you were on my list of friends in Facebook. I checked out your profile and you don't have Friends listed on your profile although you do have Following. I tried to send you a message on your profile but Facebook left a warning that it could not be accepted because of your Facebook format.

Tough group
I'll see if I can get you accepted, Roy.

Thank you.
Dave, I read about your mom on Flickr. Much respect. I got my private pilot’s license but can’t imagine me flying what she flew during the war. What a great generation.

Mom on Flickr
Dad was in the military for 23 years, retiring as a Lt Col. Mom and Dad met while both were in the military, stationed at March AFB in Victorville. Mom attended WASP training, Class 43-6, at Avenger Field in Sweetwater, Texas. Mom received her Congressional Gold Medal on March 10, 2010 as a member of the WASPs for her contribution to World War 2.
