Pigeon Horntail? - Tremex columba - male

Pigeon Horntail? - Tremex columba - Male
Cherry Beach, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
August 17, 2008
Size: ~22mm
I found this guy apparently trapped in the seedhead of a burdock. After taking advantage of his predicament for a few shots, I helped him get free, though he didn't recover enough to fly in the few minutes I observed him. I've not seen an insect caught like this before - has anyone else?

I'm pretty sure it's a male Pigeon Horntail, having identified them for others on this site a few times - can anyone confirm?

Beatriz posted something not quite the same
here , and we think we've seen a couple of posts here about small insects getting stuck on milkweed pollenia and not being able to break free. Mike Reese has an image of Enallagma getting stuck to the sticky seed buds of Sow Thistle in the Northwoods Damselfly book and on his webpage, Wisconsin Butterflies. Lots of hazards out there!
