Milkweed Longhorn Beetle - Tetraopes discoideus

Milkweed Longhorn Beetle - Tetraopes discoideus
State Road 518, San Miguel County, New Mexico, USA
July 23, 2022
One of quite a few individuals found in a patch of horsetail milkweed (Asclepias subverticillata) about 22 feet from the edge of the road, roughly 9 miles north of Las Vegas.

Previously I'd checked several other clumps of A. subverticillata growing right beside the pavement at multiple locations along State Road 104 and found no milkweed beetles. I figured the blasts of wind and noise from passing traffic is what discouraged them from occupying the plants, but the presence of pompilid wasps, ants, and milkweed bugs (Lygaeus kalmii) on those same plants leads me to think it might've been due to overcrowding. It's an interesting observation for sure.

This is officially my favorite genus of cerambycid, and my desire to collect some individuals has finally been satiated.

I'm indebted to the friendly fellow that joined us for moth summoning at Sabinoso Wilderness who had encountered the beetles earlier and kindly provided the GPS location of the milkweed plants they were on.

Wonderful
I'm glad you finally found it.

For what it's worth
I've noticed a similar behavior when collecting Tetraopes melanurus - they seem to be toward the back of roadside patches of butterflyweed, Asclepias tuberosa. I chalked it up to the wind from vehicles as well, but that was just a fantasy of mine - no scientific basis! But when one thinks about it - hymenopterans are pretty flighty anyway, and ants just hang on, so maybe the beetles dislike the disruption more than the other visitors do?
