Pyrochroid pupa - Dendroides canadensis Nashua, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
Side angle view.
Pupated 06/21/05.
I suspected a pyrochroid larva in one of my rearing containers was pupating when it exhibited the classical twisting wiggle of a pupa when disturbed. Sure enough, a couple days later it had shed its final larval skin and was fully pupated. This is the first pyrochroid pupa I've seen. Today, June 23, I found several more beneath bark and was able to regognize them as pyrochoids because of their shape and the unusual position of the legs.
