Brunner's mantis (Brunneria borealis) - Brunneria borealis

Brunner's mantis (Brunneria borealis) - Brunneria borealis
Moss Point, Jackson County, Mississippi, USA
August 14, 2008
Size: 3-5 inches
Found in burned marsh on Pt. Aux Chenes (Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve) approximately one week after lightning apparently started a fire.

mantis
I've looked through the comments on other stick-like mantises, and I'm pretty sure this is a Brunner's mantis(Brunneria borealis). Apparently the pronotal serrations are distinctive.

This is actually a mantis.
Look at its head, a walkingstick's is much different. It can't turn and look over its shoulder like a mantis. Notice also its front pair of legs, they are made for grabbing insects. The two other pairs of legs are also close together like a mantis. I don't have any mantises like this where I live, so I'm not sure what species it is. If I figure it out I'll let you know.
