Kermesid
Wazee Lake Recreation Area, Jackson County, Wisconsin, USA
July 30, 2022
Found in oak/pine barrens habitat.

Ants are Dolichoderus taschenbergi (Mayr, 1866). A few feet from their nest is a small oak sapling. I noticed a large number of ants crawling around on the sapling. Then I noticed what appeared to be galls, a lot of them. I can't recall seeing these scales before in all my travels in Wisconsin. The ants seemed to like them.
