pricky Orb Weaver - Micrathena gracilis

pricky Orb Weaver - Micrathena gracilis
Foxfire Museum and Heritage Center, Mountain City, Georgia, USA
August 11, 2008
Size: 1 cm.
Went on a trip down to Georgia to visit family this summer.
This guy was outside the visitor's center at the Foxfire Museum (which we arrived at just before closing time unfortunately).

There were many of these along much of the trip. I was surprised.
This one's abdomen was flattened & shriveled in comparison to the others I saw. I'll post photos of the larger bodied ones soon.

Not an ID
It looks like one of the Spined Micrathena. We have a lot of them here in Georgia. They are usually encountered in the woods across trails and it seems they always build their webs head high for you to walk into if you're not watching for them. Best to watch for them or twirl a stick in front of you to clear webs out of the way.

Yeah...
I found that out the hard way while I was there. ^U^'
