i had just returned home when i noted this and another cicada in the process of mating. by the time i retrieved my camera and returned outside, the intimacy was over and they were separated. had they blushed at my sudden intrusion and quickly disengaged; or were they simply at the 'smoke a cigarette' stage? i guess i'll never know.

gerry bunker id'd these images as Tibicen lyricen, subspecies 'engelhardti'. after a bit of browsing around, i concur.
