According to Troubridge (2008), Sympistis pallida is the only species that can be easily mistaken for S. khem. S. pallida has a darker ST area on a much narrower forewing. The hindwing fringe of khem is checkered, but in pallida the dark gray medial line of the fringe is unbroken. (1)
