Poanes aaroni - subspecies howardi? - Poanes aaroni
Okefenokee Swamp - Mizell Prairie boardwalk, Charlton County, Georgia, USA
August 29, 2022
Found in late morning near the boardwalk/viewing platform at Okefenokee NWR in Charlton County, near Mizell Prairie (the end of the trail closest to the refuge parking lot/boat rental area.) There were other skippers nearby that may have been the same species, but they were difficult to photograph. Other species present were Papilio palamedes and what I believe to be both Bombus fraternus and Bombus pennsylvanicus.
This was identified on iNaturalist as Poanes aaroni, and noted that it would be a first for Georgia on BugGuide so I finally joined BugGuide. I checked to see if it was a tracked species by GA DNR, and the subspecies is. I have no idea how to tell if this is the subspecies, howardi - can anyone on this site help? I appreciate any assistance. (I'll probably send it to the state anyway to be on the safe side.)

Adds Georgia
Yes. Definitely Aaron's and it is the 'howardi' ssp. The 'aaroni' ssp. occurs further north (from around New Jersey to Virginia).

I wish I had seen this earlier. I was just over that way, but did not go to this specific location. I was out at the homestead area and on Chesser Island. They were out there as well. I got there mid-afternoon and it was VERY hot. So they were not very active, not nectaring and were hiding from the sun, etc. I was still able to see and photograph several of them.

I follow everybody back on iNaturalist who follows me and try to help out with butterfly IDs. I have more or less stepped away from identifying here on BugGuide. I've done 34K IDs on iNat in the last couple years but have been doing less there lately as well. Trying to lead a more balanced life and too busy with some other stuff.

I have started putting some of my butterflies on the Butterflies of Georgia, US Project at iNat.

Please consider us following each other on iNaturalist since we are both active with butterflies and could help each other out there.
