Tiny Wasp? - Plenoculus davisi - female

Tiny Wasp? - Plenoculus davisi - Female
Brighton, Northumberland, Ontario, Canada
August 24, 2008
Size: 1/4 inch app.
This little wasp was just sitting on one of the stones in my garden. Help with ID please.

Plenoculus davisi, female (ON)
Excellent, a new genus for Bugguide! These wasps are not rare but they are usually ignored because they are small. I assume you have at least a small sandy area nearby because they nest in sand. Prey are mirids.

Thank you Richard and Matthias. I live in an area where the soil is very sandy.

Yes - a small Crabronid Wasp
I'd say a member of the Larrinae subfamily. Hopefully Eric, Dr Ascher or Dr Buck will know more.
