At the base of a Palmetto tree, these tiny insect were excavating underground, as was clear from the loads of sand they were carrying outside in their jaws.
There were, what I presume to have been Prenolepis ants running along the bark of the tree, but I failed to get any good photos (though I do have one that shows an ant, but still not of good quality).
