Ants 2 - Solenopsis - female

Ants 2 - Solenopsis - Female
South of the Border, Uninc Dillon County, South Carolina, USA
August 14, 2008
Size: 1-2 mm?
At the base of a Palmetto tree, these tiny insect were excavating underground, as was clear from the loads of sand they were carrying outside in their jaws.
There were, what I presume to have been Prenolepis ants running along the bark of the tree, but I failed to get any good photos (though I do have one that shows an ant, but still not of good quality).

Moved
Moved from Ants.

Not sure
I think you mean mm not cm. And I believe they're either Solenopsis or Pheidole. Not sure though.

Solenopsis for sure
