Thick headed fly ... Physoconops sp. ? - Physocephala texana - male

Thick headed fly ... Physoconops sp. ? - Physocephala texana - Male
Livermore , Alameda creek, Alameda County, California, USA

Size: 1/2 "
I recognize this fellow as a thick headed fly , but am not sure which one . This fly looks like a wasp . Anyhow , I do not come across many of these strange flies so I thought that I would enter him in the Bugguide . IU am only guessing Physoconops species because of my handy and great Kaufman field guide . It is nearly impossible to find an insect that is not already pictured in this book ! Thanks for any comments , Beth

Moved from Physocephala.

Overall gestalt here is of P. texana, and the yellow area of cheeks, visible here in front of eye from below, definitively cinches ID (ruling out P. burgessi, with its uniformly dark reddish cheeks).
