What is this bug??? - Arilus cristatus

What is this bug??? - Arilus cristatus
Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, USA
August 25, 2008
Size: about an inch and a half
My son found this bug on our door when he went to come into the house. My son and I were afraid of it, so I got a fly swatter and tried to gently move it away from the doorknob. When I bumped it, it flew a short distance, landed, then tried to climb the porch. It was moving kind of slow. It's about an inch and a half long. The picture is clear enough to see the rest of the detail for yourself. We've never seen one of these anywhere before.

I also cropped your image to allow the insect to fill the frame.
