Nectaring on rabbitbrush flowers, Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus, in a campsite. First time I have photoed a male. Is it V. pensylvanica?

Dolichovespula arenaria?
After looking through the key "YELLOWJACKETS & HORNETS THROUGH A LENS", in the Photo Focus Group, linked in Aaron's comments as the "BugGuide Key" here:
A pronotal carina line is visible in the 6th photo. This should make this genus Dolichovespula as the pronotal carina line is not present in Vespula. Also the size of gap between the compound eye and the mandible (the oculo-malar space) is wide in the genus
Dolichovespula. This is also visible in the 6th photo. An anterior black band on tergite 1 with two concavities that form
a posterior-pointing median extension that divides the yellow band (G1) indicates a worker D. arenaria (visible in 3rd photo). D. arenaria is also the only yellow Dolichovespula species in the guide for California.
Thank you.
