Early Zanclognatha - Zanclognatha cruralis

Early Zanclognatha - Zanclognatha cruralis
Warren County, New York, USA
June 23, 2005
Attracted to lights at local convenience store.

The Forest Pests site notes that this species in now placed in genus Polypogon. It's also listed as Polypogon cruralis on the Caterpillars of Eastern Forests site and others.

Zanclognatha vs. Polypogon
The Butterflies & Moths of the World agrees also, saying that Poole (1989) included Zanclognatha and several other genera as junior synonyms of Polypogon.
Yesterday I emailed Don Lafontaine requesting "the latest word" on the subject (the Moths of Canada site still uses Zanclognatha labels), and will report on what transpires.

Zanclognatha a valid genus
Don Lafontaine replied with a 3-page attachment explaining the situation: in a nutshell... the same person (Poole) who lumped Zanclognatha with Polypogon in 1989, changed his mind and split them in 1996. Recent publications by other taxonomists also treat the two as separate and valid genera, based on several structural differences.
I added details and references to various sections of the Zanclognatha Guide page.
