Syntexis libocedrii
Hallelujah junction, Lassen County, California, USA
July 11, 2022
Was captured at backlights after the sun had set. This area was recently burned in the last year, and consisted of juniper trees, which are listed as one of the hosts of this species/family. I did not think much of it until a week or so later in the lab, where it shockingly keyed out to Anaxyelidae. The professor and TA teaching this Sierra entomology course both also keyed it out to this family, and they both remarked having never observed this species despite teaching in the Sierras for many years. Given how the most recent photo in bugguide is from 1970, it felt important to include a modern example of the species.
