One of the (7?) wonders of the insect world - Dolichovespula maculata - Female

This nest was (surprisingly) only 1-2' above the ground in large annual weed, in a large field that had been recently mowed (avoiding the nest). The nest was complete as shown before the mowing. 300mm lens, I didn't approach too closely!
