Nashua, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
June 16, 2005
Predator stopped to have takeout dinner on a mullien plant.

Common Pondhawk (Erythemis simplicollis)
Female Common Pondhawk. Formerly known as Eastern Pondhawk.

Eastern Pondhawk?
Eastern Pondhawk? or Common Pondhawk? This page calls it Common Pondhawk (and formerly Eastern Pondhawk), siting "Recent Common Name Changes by the Dragonfly Society of the Americas" but doesn't specify a date, so we don't know what "recent" means.
This page calls it Eastern Pondhawk, and the site calls itself the Dragonfly Society of the Americas. This is the site that BugGuide agreed to follow regarding Odonata taxonomy, and the site says it was updated in February 2005.
Has Eastern Pondhawk been changed to Common Pondhawk more recently than February of 2005?

Thanks Steve.
It seemed like a pretty "common" one to me too.

btw, I've been working near a pond/marsh in Hollis NH that's said to be the only known home of one type of dragonfly. I think I've seen it. It is mainly dark with either a green head or green face. But I haven't gotten too excited about it since, for me, dragonflies are very much an afterthought to beetles.
