Pattern, antenna, and eyepatch - Sminthurus
Deer Park, LaSalle County, Illinois, USA
November 18, 2022
A closer look at the details of the Sminthurus sp collected from the dry limestone on the side of the highway. This is a lot of pictures and I apologize for that, but I never know which photos may contain crucial details.

Note to Frans: I just uploaded a video of this individual feeding to Flickr, as well as a possibly albino Ceratophysella which popped up in a separate culture ;P

Sminthurus sp.
Could be sp.3 given the white cheeks.
Do you have lateral shots? Frontal shots? Caudal shots (from behind)?

This species died out in my attempted culture of them. I will have to try to find them again next year. At least I’ve documented where they were found! I suspect that because of their behavior in the wild of climbing to the tops of rocks and grass that they love high ventilation/low humidity and an abundance of dry land. I feel that I attempted to keep them too humid. Next time I will offer them plenty of cross ventilation and only a small patch of soil that is damp, the rest can remain dry.

No but I well get them ;)
