Philya cf. californiensis ? - Philya californiensis
Aromas, San Benito County, California, USA
August 30, 2008
Size: ~4-5mm.
Collected this guy from Baccharis pilularis by using a beating sheet, first Membracid I've seen since I started digital photography. Looks very similar to . (live oak/chaparral habitat). I remember many years ago when I took entomology, the instructor talked about how Membracids will move around the stem of the plant they are on, trying to always be on the opposite side of the stem from you. Later that summer, when I was in Park City, UT, visiting my grandparents, I found a number of Membracids on a bush and they performed exactly as the instructor said. Today I poked around a bit on the Baccharis bush where I found this guy, hoping to find more and observe the behavior again, but so far, I've found no more, maybe tomorrow.

Philya californiensis
This one's OK .... but I doubt that we know the correct species for the other individual; it looks undescribed to me.

Thank you Dr. Hamilton
for the species ID. I'll move it to the genus page for now, there doesn't appear to be a page for this species.
