I thought I was on to something when I came across your info re bald faced hornets and black jackets, but when I really looked at my pix I could see the eyes look different not to mention markings. And the legs are so long. I'm coming around to a fly. Is it a mimic? (I really am a total beginner at this.)

I photographed one of these a couple of weeks ago, it looks like Spilomyia fusca. It is a mimic of the Bald faced hornet. A neat looking fly.
