bizarre moth - Eichlinia gloriosa

bizarre moth - Eichlinia gloriosa
Pima Canyon, Santa Catalina Mts, Pima County, Arizona, USA
August 31, 2008
1st of 2 images. Some kind of Sphinx Moth? Note metallic blue "tails". Had bright red/orange unders when it flew. Looked for this in Sphinx images in Bugguide to no avail. Does anyone have any idea what in'a world this one is??

Pretty certain.
Pretty certain this is what it is. They are much larger than the eastern species I was familiar with before I came out here:-)

Thanks Eric,
Pretty certain you nailed it. Curiously, it looked like the blue tails came off the hind wing on my image - good to see where they came from - still a very bizarre moth, and beautiful.

You're welcome.
Keep up the great photography.
