here is a reference for the Zhou article
for the synonymy of Lanorus and Paranovelsis
https://bugguide.net/node/view/2424028

and other like possible synonymy of Dearthrus with palearctic genus Globicornis, but I'll probably talk about later. I think separate points could be left in the comments under the citation, what do you think?

Paranovelsis perplexa --> Paranovelsis perplexus
one small note not related to the observation:
the species name should be changed to perplexus

so the current name should be Lanorus perplexus (Jayne, 1882) because of gender adjustment to the genus name (masculine)

as mentioned in the comment here:

P.S. the page for Lanorus cites 2018 catalogue but the change was only accepted in the 2023 (current) edition. Maybe add a new reference?
synonymy itself is per Zhou et al., 2022 previously linked in the comment below. I think adding this article will also be useful in future

perplexed
What do you think?

An iNaturalist identifier had this to say - "L. perplexus - found on the western side of US, from British Columbia to California and extending to Montana and Nevada

while L. aequalis:

"Eastern United States (Pennsylvania to Oklahoma and Texas)" and some random records in Mexico (Baja California, Veracruz)

besides distribution info, I think pattern of the beetle may fit better with aequalis rather than perplexus"

Paranovelsis aequalis
Yes, that was my message. I still think this is Paranovelsis aequalis rather than the other species. There were apparently no records of perplexus here, and I have not seen any observations which were like perplexus

P.S.

L. stands for Lanorus per revision in the article below:

Zhou, Y.-L., Nicholls, J. A., Liu, Z.-H., Hartley, D., Szito, A., Ślipiński, A., & Zwick, A. (2022). Molecular Phylogeny of Dermestidae (Coleoptera) Reveals the Polyphyletic Nature of Trogoderma Latreille and the Taxonomic Placement of the Khapra Beetle Trogoderma granarium Everts. Insect Systematics and Diversity, 6(6), 2. https://doi.org/10.1093/isd/ixac026

This synonymy (Paranovelsis --> Lanorus) is adopted in World Catalogue of Dermestidae 2023 but I don't think the system has to be adopted on BugGuide just yet. There are also many other drastic changes in the article due to extensive genetic research. Some I implemented for the taxonomy on iNaturalist but some is postponed for later

i'm awfully sorry about that bad call...
