The wings are chewed off (happens a lot to females while mating). Anyway, it looks like it is likely Melanoplus bivittatus (Two-striped Grasshopper), but big fat females of those are usually closer to 2 inches long.

Thanks for the feedback. Now that I think about it, it probably was longer than an inch, maybe more like 1 1/2" or more.

You're welcome. I also meant to explain that the wings being chewed off make it a little harder to identify, but some of the words came up missing.
Great shot of how we often see them late in the season.
