I was searching the web trying to figure out what kind of grasshopper this was, and wouldn't you know it, I stumbled on this website. The irony of it is that I, too, am in Lake Valley, NM. These "lubbers' have been ALL OVER THE PLACE! They've been busy procreating, as I have observed many doing just that these past few days.

That is a great photo you have uploaded. Thanks for putting it on this site, so that others, like myself could get the answer on what these grasshoppers were. Even though they are EVERYWHERE, they are beautiful!

It's a Lubber Grasshopper. They're even bigger (and usually greener) up in the Great Plains in OK, KS, CO, NE etc. than they usually are in southern NM and AZ, but yours at three inches is a whopper. Oh, she's a girl.
