Biecentennial Park in Reedsport, Douglas County, Oregon, USA
January 2, 2023
Size: 6mm
This large flea and another like it were found by Katie Lockard and her dog, Piper, after romping around in a forested park. I identified this specimen to species using the excellent book, The Fleas of the Pacific Northwest (Lewis, Lewis & Maser 1988). This is a photo of the specimen after I placed it in 70% ethanol. The alcohol caused the specimen to contract a bit so it looks a bit shorter than before preservation, but a lot of the diagnostic features are visible. This shot is with a dark background.
