yellow-faced bumblebee - Bombus - Male
Port Townsend, Jefferson County, Washington, USA
September 2, 2008
Based on the very helpful GUIDE TO THE BOMBUS OF SAN FRANCISCO By Quinn S. McFrederick (http://online.sfsu.edu/~beeplot/pdfs/San%20Francisco%20Bombus.pdf), this is a male Bombus vosnesenskii of type b in the illustrations. Note the partial second light-colored band on the abdomen.

Moved
Moved from Yellow-faced Bumble Bee. If John says that it can be either of two species it should be placed at subgenus level, not species level.

caliginosus or vosnesenskii

puzzled by this specimen
This specimen caught my eye because the abdominal yellow is not confined to T4. Note the incomplete ring of yellow pile on T5.
