Underwing Moth - Catocala muliercula

Underwing Moth - Catocala muliercula
Three Lakes WMA, Osceola County, Florida, USA
May 11, 2005

Catocala muliercula (8774)
This moth is Catocala muliercula. The blue refection of some of the scales on the forewings is typical of "muliercula". The problem is when you are at a baited tree with four or five adult "muliercula" moths feeding on the sugar bait and you want to collect that one Catocala delilah (8835) sitting in the middle of them. If one moth flys, all will fly, and that's the game.

8774 - The Little Wife Underwing - Catocala muliercula
.... with some reservation, but I think the warm brown "shoulder" area and the precise matching of lines with good examples (Covell, for example) make it this species.

Little Wife
The plate in Covell shows a female, whose forewing is much lighter than the forewing of a male shown in Holland's Moth Book. Comparing both of those to this specimen, it seems that color may vary quite a bit, though still maintain the chocolate brown you both described.

Catocala
I'll back you on that Bob. Sometimes I'm too dependent on the hindwings to be sure, but I have a series of these collected in Florida as well. It's one of the few Catocala that shows that rich chocolate color in the wings. Good call.
