Mournful Sphinx Moth?? - Enyo lugubris
WH, Central County, Florida, USA
September 3, 2008
Size: 1-1.5"
Looks like a mournful sphinx, but tail looks different. Hits my pentas every evening. They come in pairs and one is darker than the other.

Mournful Sphinx Moth
I've seen the exact same bug in my backyard. I'm in Charleston, SC. I just saw him/her on 9/1/2008. He was feeding on purple verbena. I have a photo, and he looks just like yours. I also had decided that it was a Mournful Sphinx Moth. Also, mine has the exact same tail as yours. It doesn't have the little flare shown in other photos on this site. Maybe that's a variation, since ours do show the vertical line and the spots the same. I'd post an image with this posting if I knew how.
